Icy roads created hazardous conditions for drivers in the Hudson Valley on Wednesday (March 4), leading to numerous accidents and traffic disruptions. The region experienced a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, making the morning commute particularly treacherous.

According to the Times Union, the adverse weather conditions also resulted in multiple crashes across the area on Tuesday. Notable incidents included a head-on collision between a U-Haul truck and a Jeep Compass at the intersection of Route 7 and Mohegan roads in Niskayuna. Emergency crews responded to numerous accidents, and several road closures were reported, including a southbound lane of I-87 and a westbound lane of Interstate 88.

The WFSB reported that freezing fog and ice also caused dangerous travel conditions in nearby Connecticut, leading to crashes on major highways like I-84 and I-91. An eight-vehicle pileup in Hartford closed I-91 south for hours, while other accidents led to lane closures on Route 9 and Route 15.

Meteorologists warned that icy conditions would persist into the morning, with black ice posing a significant threat to drivers and pedestrians. As temperatures remained at freezing, roadways continued to be slippery, prompting authorities to advise caution. Conditions improved later in the morning as the sun emerged, helping to melt the ice.

Drivers and pedestrians were urged to adjust their travel plans and exercise extreme caution while navigating the icy roads. The weather is expected to improve, with temperatures rising to about 50 degrees, offering some relief from the icy conditions.
