The Hudson Valley remains under a heat advisory as temperatures soar into the mid-to-upper 90s, with the heat index making it feel over 100 degrees. The National Weather Service has extended the advisory for Rockland, Westchester, Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, and Putnam counties until 8 p.m. Tuesday (June 24).
Local authorities urge residents to take precautions against the extreme heat. Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester's health commissioner, advised, "Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take frequent breaks from outdoor work if it cannot be rescheduled." Vulnerable groups such as infants, older adults, and those with pre-existing health conditions are encouraged to stay indoors in air-conditioned environments.
Cooling centers have been set up across the region to provide relief from the heat. Residents can find the nearest center through the New York State Department of Health's website. Unfortunately, several beaches in the area, including Hudson Park East Beach and Harbor Island Beach, remain closed due to high bacteria levels and harmful algae blooms, according to the Hudson Valley Post.
The National Weather Service warns that the combination of heat and humidity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those engaging in outdoor activities. They recommend rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.
