The Walkway Over the Hudson has been recognized by USA Today as one of the most scenic views in America. This accolade highlights the walkway's status as the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world, spanning 1.28 miles and standing 212 feet above the Hudson River. Originally built in 1888 as the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, it reopened in 2009 as the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. The park now attracts over seven million visitors annually and hosts various events, including the Hudson Valley Marathon and Fourth of July fireworks.
Located less than a mile from the Poughkeepsie Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak station, the park connects the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in Highland to the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail. It is also part of the Empire State Trail, which stretches from New York City to Buffalo through Albany. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views and participate in events like the Hudson Valley Marathon, which features races of various distances.
The walkway's recognition by USA Today places it alongside other scenic locations such as Horseshoe Bend in Arizona and Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. For more information on events and visiting details, the Walkway Over the Hudson's website offers a comprehensive calendar and visitor guide.
