Dutchess County is offering a free, sensory-friendly performance of the holiday classic ballet, "The Nutcracker". The performance, presented by the New Paltz Ballet Theatre, is part of the county's Think Differently initiative, which aims to promote inclusivity. The show will take place at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie on Friday, December 13, starting at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and outside food and drink are not permitted in the theater.

County Executive Sue Serino said, "Every child of every ability deserves to enjoy the holiday season to the fullest, and ‘The Nutcracker’ is a beloved classic that appeals to all of us. Dutchess County is proud to again offer a stress-free night at the theater for children with disabilities and their families while they enjoy this holiday tradition." according to the county's official website.

The performance will be a "no-hush" event, fostering an informal, non-judgmental atmosphere where audience members can experience and respond to the performance in their own way. Adjustments will be made to both the lighting and sound to make the experience more enjoyable for those on the autism spectrum or who experience sensory concerns.

Due to limited seating, reservations are required and can be made online at dutchessny.gov/nutcracker. The deadline for registration is Monday, December 9, 2024.
